Chapter 7
Violet didn’t know how she’d gotten herself into this situation, splashing and playing with Nash in the ocean, but here they were. It was like they’d just fallen into being sixteen again.
He held her foot because she’d been splashing him. “Vi, if I let your foot go, can you promise you won’t try to splash me again?”
She giggled, unsure where this girlishness was coming from. “No promises, Nash.”
He hooted out a laugh and shoved her foot away. “Go on now!”
She swam a bit away, still laughing.
Even though it was dark, the ocean was warm and the tiki hut wasn’t too far away. They were the only ones out in the water, but Violet didn’t feel isolated. “I love this place,” she admitted.
Nash ran a hand through his wet hair, following her gaze back to the resort. “Yeah, I kinda fell in love with it the first time I came.”
Violet nodded. She’d heard about how amazing the owner was, how he’d literally saved their town after the hurricanes. “Rishi told me a bunch of stories about you, when I didn’t even realize that you were … you.” Uncertainty pulsed through her. “Never mind.”
He grunted. “Well, believe me, I had no idea that you were you when she dragged me out to the clinic that day.”
Another laugh bubbled out of her. “Yeah, guess neither of us was expecting each other.”
The moment fell quiet, and she tried to push away all the thoughts of their past. It was a constant struggle.
Keeping his shoulders beneath the water, he moved next to her. “Listen, so I don’t want to start a fight, but I do want to know what happened to you.”
“I promised you, Thursday night.”
“I know.” He hesitated. “But don’t you think I’ve waited long enough?”
She sighed. What did it matter if it was now or then? “You mean after Lily.”
Nash put his hands on her arms and pulled her closer. “I loved her, too, Vi. I never had any siblings, but she was like a sister to me. You know that.”
Tears misted in her eyes, and she thought about all those hours they’d spent together. Still, he couldn’t have suffered like Violet had over the years. She shook her head, remembering how the rain had come down so hard. “I regret that day so much. Why did I tell her to leave us alone?”
He dropped his hands, and she saw the pain in his eyes. “I told her, too.”
“I know.” She’d spent so many hours thinking about that. “And I don’t forgive either of us.”
“We were sixteen, Vi. We were kids.”
“I was in charge of her!” she raged. “I was in charge of her, and I let her die. I just …”
His face darkened with a scowl. “We told her to leave us alone, but we didn’t tell her to run off into that storm, Vi.”
She thought of the storm, of the lightning and the rain, how even then Nash had taken charge and gone into the storm without batting an eye. “You were so brave.
